Brotherhood - Cheerfulness - Service Although these words seem familiar to everyone in Scouting, they are especially significant to members of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society. The Medicine Pipe Chapter is the Centennial District's OA organization, one of seven chapters within Tahosa Lodge of the Denver Area Council. This page is a very brief description of our chapter's function, and includes contact information to help you connect with us. The Order of the Arrow began in 1915, just a few years after the founding of the Boy Scouts of America. It is designed both to recognize outstanding Scouts, but also to further the order's goal of providing cheerful service to Scouting and the wider community. In order for youth Scouts (in this case all Scouts under the age of 21) to become members of the Order of the Arrow, they must be First Class Scouts, have camped for 15 nights during the past two years (including one long term camp, ie summer camp or similar) and be considered worthy of selection by their Scoutmaster or unit leader by exemplifying the Scout Oath and Law. Once those requirements are met, the Scout is eligible for election, which may happen only once per year per unit. These elections must take place from December through early March, and should ideally be conducted by an election team from the Medicine Pipe Chapter. A valid election requires 50 percent of the active Scouts in the unit to participate. In order for a Scout to be elected as a candidate, he must receive 50 percent of those votes. The election isn't a competition among eligible Scouts, but rather an effort to determine whether each inpidual Scout is worthy of the honor. It may result in some, all, or none of the eligible Scouts being elected. Adults may be recommended for membership by the troop committee during the same election season. They must meet the same camping requirements as youth candidates. Scouts and adults who become candidates are then eligible to participate in the first level of OA membership, or the Ordeal. These weekends take place several times in May and once in the fall, typically late September or early October.
