The John and Marjorie Madden Merit Scholarship was established by John and Marjorie Madden to ensure the highest quality and continuity of staff members for DAC camps. The scholarship is awarded annually to selected BSA registered members of camp staff who meet all the requirements. Merit-based consideration is given for camp service, community involvement, demonstrated academic ability, creativity of service, leadership opportunities and personal initiative.
Applicants must be employed as a DAC camp staff member (McNeil Scout Ranch at Peaceful Valley or Tahosa High Adventure Base) for at least two summers, one of which must be the summer immediately preceding application. Scholars are required to work each summer during their scholarship. Both applicants and Scholars must have a semester Grade Point Average of 2.85 or greater and scholars are required to perform 20 hours of community service outside of the BSA.
The 2022 Madden Guidelines explain the requirements. In addition, checklists are available to assist in making sure all documents are submitted.
To apply for the John and Marjorie Madden Merit Scholarship, complete the 2022 Application Packet submit it to the Denver Area Council, Madden Committee by Monday, November 1, 2021 at 5 p.m. Interviews for applicants that meet all the requirements will be held by early January 2022.

As per the 2022 Madden Guidelines that has been provided to all scholars and to all new applicants, these are positions that will qualify for an additional bonus of $1,000 per year for management positions. These positions will need to be applied for yearly, are competitive in nature, and are not guaranteed from year to year. These positions and bonuses are not retroactive. This bonus is awarded yearly for the positions listed below and only for that summer camp season.
